Joe Biden, or at least his writers, managed to find the right words after Israel took out Hasan Nasrallah, Mr. Hezbollah, last week. The president said Nasrallah’s death “is a measure of justice for his many victims, including Americans, Israelis, and Lebanese civilians.”
By contrast, the Washington Post’s headline in yesterday’s paper edition states, “Nasrallah’s killing staggers Lebanon.”
Really? Maybe it staggers Hezbollah. Let’s hope so.
But Lebanon? Many among that beleaguered nation’s Sunnis and Christians, each group constituting about one-third of the country’s population, might take issue with the Post.
In fact, Lebanon staggered under Nasrallah’s oppressive hand. The economy of what was once the jewel of the Middle East is in the tank — so much so that discontent with Hezbollah was beginning to surface even within the Shiite population.
In the absence of Hezbollah’s militias, there would be reason to hope that Lebanon, like Egypt, Jordan, and several other countries in the Middle East would have decent relations with Israel and a shot at digging out of its malaise.
A better Post headline would be: “Nasrallah’s killing offers Lebanon a lifeline.”
The Post informs us that “during nearly a year of war with Israel, Nasrallah had repeatedly stated a limited objective; the securing of a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip.” Never mind what Biden called his “four-decade reign of terror.” Never mind that the purpose of the cease-fire he sought was to protect Nasrallah’s fellow Iranian-sponsored terrorists in Gaza who had just butchered more than 1,000 people.
In the Post’s telling, Nasrallah was a peacemaker. Where do I send the flowers?
Erick Erickson wasn’t exaggerating by much when, in his piece about the death of Nasrallah, he wrote: “My thoughts and prayers are with the Washington Post on the loss of their Supreme Editor.”
The Post seems to have found a new Supreme Editor, though. Today’s edition treats Hezbollah as a bulwark against Israeli aggression in Lebanon, without whose presence the Lebanese would be unable to stave off the Jewish state.
But oddly, Jordan and Egypt, without Hezbollah to protect them, aren’t experiencing Israeli aggression. Maybe that’s precisely because they have no Hezbollah (or similarly strong terrorist group) taking orders from Iran and threatening Israel’s destruction.
The Post also complains that U.S. officials did not know Israel was going to try to kill Nasrallah and were “caught off guard” by his demise. The assassination left our officials “scrambling,” says the Post.
Really? The Israelis had taken out several of Hezbollah’s top commanders. It’s difficult to believe that our officials were surprised that Israel did not stop short of killing the guy at the very top.
Or maybe not so difficult. The Biden administration has consistently failed to understand the seriousness of Israel’s purpose in confronting its deadly enemies in the aftermath of the October 7 massacre. No wonder Team Biden always seem to be scrambling.
Netanyahu’s words consistently express his seriousness. Polls show that Israelis, despite not liking their prime minister, share it. Israel’s actions consistently exhibit it.
Why do Biden and his advisers not get it? I believe it’s because they are so deeply unserious about dealing with America’s enemies that they have a hard time believing in the resolve of other nations — be they friend (like Israel) or foe (like Iran and Russia).
The only enemies against whom Democrats can muster seriousness of purpose are its domestic enemies — namely Republicans and conservatives. Foreign enemies, they seek to appease, and seem chronically surprised by their lack of success.
WAPO is a disaster. I picked up discarded copies of the Saturday and Sunday Posts. They were a farrago of anti-Trump stories, with nary a mention of the ICE letter telling Congress how many illegal-immigrant felons there are in the country. I realize they include those coming to America during past administrations, but given Biden's porous borders, it's likely a good chunk, if not the lion's share, came during the Biden administration. Besides, ICE details the felonious illegals it knows about, and there are obviously many criminal gotaways not included in the ICE tally. Jim Dueholm
Words cannot begin to describe either the grotesquery of the Post Times BBBBC etc nor the patheticness of the Democratic foreign policy establishment.
