The conservative blogosphere (as we used to call it) is buzzing about Donald Trump’s performance at a rally this weekend in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. During this event, the former president blasted Ron DeSantis, who is trying (and almost certain) to keep America’s third most populous state out of leftist hands.
Erick Erickson writes:
[Trump] got on stage at a late midterm rally and railed against Ron DeSantis. He blasted DeSantis’s handling of COVID. He claimed DeSantis was part of the Republican establishment. “Ron DeSanctimonious,” he called him.
This reminds me of last year when he went after Kemp in Georgia.
He said, “Stacey, would you like to take [Kemp’s] place? It's OK with me… might be better than having your existing governor, if you want to know what I think. Might very well be better.”. . .
If Trump were to win in 2024, he’d be constitutionally restricted to one term. He’d also turn eighty years old in the 2026 midterms, just as Biden is turning eighty in this year’s midterms.
Can we stop doing this?
Can we stop electing 80-year-olds? Can’t we the people find someone who is not a self-absorbed baby boomer?
This is ridiculous and Republicans should note that their party leader is on the campaign trail attacking a popular Republican governor for the audacity of not being subservient to him and kissing his ring.
It’s shameful and he needs to go away.
I agree with Erick that Trump’s age is one reason not to favor him for the GOP nomination in 2024. I also agree that Trump’s attacks on DeSantis, Kemp, and other conservatives who have incurred his wrath for not “kissing his ring” are another reason.
However, I disagree that Trump’s age has anything to do with these attacks. Trump would be going after DeSantis and Kemp if he were half his current age.
That’s just who he is.
Well stated. Sad, but true.
