“Deeply hated” - by whom ? By Democrats and never-Trumpers ? That leaves 51% of Americans...,, if the votes are counted by those who are not Democrats or never-Trumpers.
I am hopeful that Trump can pull off a presidential election victory, although I don't think he can be an effective president. But aside from 2016, when no one expected a close race, he's lost every election.
I don't think his base realizes how disliked he is among independents.
Great post. I would only add that the Gray Lady's prediction of what Trump would do is doubly doubtful. It's questionable whether a reelected Trump would seek retribution, but just as questionable that any retribution he sought would be disruptive. He would have reason to clean the Augean Stables in the DOJ and the FBI, and to pursue to its conclusion the case against the Biden family. If he did so his actions may be unseemly, they may be unprecedented, they may ignore the long-standing tradition that the president will not become involved in criminal cases, but I doubt they would be disruptive. Certainly they wouldn't be as disruptive as the attempts of Democrat officials, and likely the Biden administration, to use state and federal justice systems to run interference in the 2024 election. Perhaps they meant retribution for losing the election rather than against the deep state after he would retake office? In other words, winning being the best vengeance.
I would believe the Iowa caucus goers did sign up for that.
