Word from somewhere in the Trump camp is that Ron DeSantis is under serious consideration for Secretary of Defense if Pete Hegseth withdraws or his nomination is defeated.
The political career path often leads from governor to president, especially if one is governor of a big state like Florida. Taking a staff position in the Trump administration would be a bad career move for DeSantis.
I hadn't even considered how bad things could be for DeSantis if he took the job. However, your points seem well taken. Do you think they apply to Rubio too?
Thanks for the comment, Norm. As to Rubio, I think it depends on whether he still has presidential aspirations. If so, he should decline. If not, he should probably accept, even though it might well be a bumpy ride.
I was excited about Marco Rubio and Elise Stefanik(?) and had great expectations for Trump's cabinet. And then it went downhill fast.
Pete Hegseth is not qualified to run the DoD. Being a Major means that his highest level of command was a company commander. The Defense Department is massive and requires much more experience.
I was excited again when I heard about Desantis for Defense Secretary and I hope to see the headline that Hegseth dropped out. He is a tik tok/you tube candidate who can talk but this job requires experience.
I love Trump but was for Desantis for president. Sadly unless something unforseen happens in his next term, I think Vance is already a lock for the nomination.
I like Vance as well, but I think Desantis would be an excellent President.
Thank you for opening the comments! I can think of no one who has entered Trump's orbit and experienced a long-term benefit. Many have found themselves disgraced, indicted, or both. Any achievements are inevitably co-opted by Trump, who takes sole credit. Any failures, regardless of root cause, are sloughed off onto them.
The biggest downside to DeSantis becoming SoD is he would no longer be governor of Florida, which, aside from numerous other benefits, keeps Florida a solidly red state.
DeSantis should bide his time. He’s relatively young with many opportunities on the national stage to come.
As for Vance, who knows how things will stand in 4 years? He’s as likely to fall out of Trump’s good graces and be forced to resign as he is to be groomed and polished for carrying on Trump’s legacy.
Trump is far too volatile and unpredictable for a fine governor like DeSantis to hitch his wagon to that crazy horse, IMO.
Thanks for the comment. I think you are right about DeSantis.
As for Vance, there is the risk of a falling out, especially if Trump gets in serious trouble. However, I think the odds are in his favor when it comes to the 2028 nomination.
All of Trumps candidates should be given the benefit of the doubt, if the uniparty republicans can get on board, we'll see, any of them that keep the candidates from taking office should continue to be primaried post haste, can always change the cabinet/posts later if they don't work out. Trump was given the mandate by the people. The uniparty is doing all it can to maintain the stranglehold. Disruption is a big part of the current agenda, leaving the status quo in the dust.

Thanks for the comment. I agree.

Thanks for the comment. I agree with all of this, except I don't love Trump.
