And one more thing. HIs pose of bravely saying what cannot be said is painful. This is just what everyone says. Even smarter people must semi-concede these same points in oder to sneak through the Overton window on China . The brave stance is to defy this nonsense.
China is a nation that has progressively thrown off communism and embraced freedom in one of the most remarkable transformations in world history. Cotton ignores the three most important word in the English language "Compared to What." Xi has been a terrible throwback, but he is unlikely to survive precisely because he is a throwback. The retreat from lockdowns in the face of public protests was an astonishing show of weakness. I doubt he will survive the next congress or whatever they call it. His economic policies are almost as bad as the Democrats would be if they had their way.
China is preparing for war.
It is the job of all governments to prepare for war. No state has a "right" to exist unless it can vindicate that right by exercising its power either military, diplomatic, or economic.
China is waging economic world war.
Economic competition is not war. The claims that China has gotten ahead by theft, not organic progress are, as I have documented extensively, flat our lies.
China has infiltrated our society.
Though not nearly as thoroughly as we have theirs, an infiltration that has been wonderful for the Chinese.
China has infiltrated our government.
And alas we do not seem to have infiltrated theirs. Like the Israelis the Chinese are better than we are at this sort of thing.
China is coming for our kids.
Please...
China could win.
I have not read the book, but his concern over Taiwan is ludicrous. Yes, if the Chinese moved on Taiwan, which is a short boat ride from one billion Chinese, the Chinese would win. If we sent our entire carrier fleet against China to protect Taiwan, our entire fleet would be sunk in a few hours.
What these people never say--Gingrich's book is just like this--is what they propose to do . Or if they do, their proposals are ridiculous. Every single thing the China hawks have done has backfired. Their measures weaken America and strengthenT China. The hawks are the worst threat America faces. They are talking us into war in order to pick up votes. They are beyond despicable.
Clever move, Richard. Instead of addressing all of the evil China has inflicted (you're obviously award of much of it), you assert that its main (but not exclusive) author, Xi, will likely soon be replaced. That assertion can't be shown to be false, yet. Nor, can it be shown that Xi's replacement won't be almost as evil. But your assertion smacks of magical thinking and, in any case, is a dodge. Policy makers must deal with China as it is (albeit with an eye to what it might become).
Evil "compared to what?" Compared to a nation that doesn't (and wouldn't) commit slow-motion genocide in Tibet. Compared to a nation that doesn't (and wouldn't) commit genocide against the Uyghurs. Compared to a nation that doesn't (and wouldn't) oppress Hong Kong in violation of its "one nation, two systems" promise. Compared to a nation that doesn't (and wouldn't) round up, imprison, and harvest the organs of members of a religious group (Falun Gong).
Slick move on "preparing for war," too. All nations should prepare to defend themselves and spend reasonable sums to that end. But China has increased military spending by more than 1,000 percent over the last quarter century. This buildup isn't for defense. Those war games China conducts against Taiwan with all that encirclement and practiced strikes against mock U.S. aircraft carrier aren't for defense.
More of the same loose play on Chinese infiltration of our society. We infiltrate Chinese society in a sense, by being a society and a culture many Chinese find attractive. China is infiltrating our society in a different and stronger sense, as Cotton shows, including its influence at our universities. (See chapter 4 of his book, if you care to.)
We also haven't unleashed a deadly drug crisis on China, as China has done to us by engineering and fueling the fentanyl epidemic that's killing so many young Americans. (See pages 149-150 of Cotton's book, if you care to.)
I hope that Cotton has Trump's ear.
And one more thing. HIs pose of bravely saying what cannot be said is painful. This is just what everyone says. Even smarter people must semi-concede these same points in oder to sneak through the Overton window on China . The brave stance is to defy this nonsense.

Senator Cotton is correct. At best, we have been naive. At worst, we have been greedy.
