"However, there is poetic justice in Ty Cobb being supplanted by a black player. Cobb was a notorious racist, even by the standards of his era." WRONG, Paul
Calling Good People "Racist" Isn't New: the Case of Ty Cobb | 5 Minute Video
Ruining someone's name is very easy. So is calling them a "racist." Take the case of Ty Cobb, one of the greatest baseball players ever. Cobb is known as a racist and a dirty ballplayer. Is it true? Charles Leerhsen, author of "Ty Cobb: A Terrible Beauty" sets the record straight.
Thanks for the comment, Steve. I watched the video and read some reviews of the Leerhsen book. Some of them agree with his conclusion that claims of Cobb's alleged racism and dirty play are false; others dispute them and cite some evidence to the contrary.
I will read the book and see what I think.
In any case, you have provided a service to this blog by noting the views of Mr. Leerhsen and posting the video of him expressing them.
A compelling, unanswerable analysis. It raises two other related but different questions. Are the pre-merger AFL players merged with NFL players to determine NFL statistics and records? If so, should they be? Jim Dueholm
If lawyers could analyze statutes the way Paul analyzes pitching, it would be a different profession.
My understanding is that Cobb does not deserve his bad reputation and that it is basically a slander.
Thanks, Doug. See Steve's comment below which expresses your understanding. See also my response.

Thanks, again.
Thing is he had his flaws, BUT (it Appears) He Wasn't A Racist and he was respected by other players.
