In 1984, at the Republican National Convention, Jeanne Kirkpatrick, still a Democrat, ripped her party for always “blaming America first.” Here, via Jay Nordlinger, is a sampling from her speech:
Establishment Democratic papers like the Washington Post and the NY Times will never run out of creative ways to spin nonsense into bizarre conclusions that a reasonably intelligent 4th grader could refute. No editor would have allowed such idiocy to be published as an op-ed let alone a news story 50 years ago. But journalistic standards have simply ceased to exist. The hatred of Israel is so intense that it is simply impossible not to blame their treatment of the Palestinians in some way. This is the mainstream establishment left line and they are sticking to it. Hell Thomas Friedman literally wrote that Israel moving into Gaza after 10/7 played right into Hamas' hands. They will never change and there is no point trying to change them. Israel would do well to develop its own weaponry without needing to depend on the now entirely unreliable United States.
Is the author of this article, willfully, ignorant, or simply brain dead? Why does nobody ever ask the question about whether there has ever been a “Palestinian” state?
Trump is an irresponsible jerk, but dreadful as that is, it's not nearly as bad as the anti-Americanism that runs the Democratic Party and the MSM (pardon the redundancy).
It's nice how the Washington Post trots out Senator Chris Murphy, who early on called for a cessation of hostilities, i.e. Israeli surrender, and later joined the ceasefire now crew. Pathetic, Murphy and the Washington Post.
Great takedown of WAPO, but I don't agree that MAGA Republicans blames America first. There's a difference between putting America first and blaming America first. Tucker Carlson may cross the line, but his positions are mercurial, often idiosyncratic, and often tainted by conspiracy theories, and he waffles between loving and hating Trump. He is not representative of MAGA Republicans as a whole.
Trump's screed are often not reflected in his policies, As for Ukraine, I think MAGA Republicans are divided on the extent and nature of the support they would give to Ukraine, but these are legitimate policy positions, not blaming America. I'm not even sure what MAGA Republicans are, for Trump supporters are a diverse bunch. My guess is that many of the 75 million who voted for Trump last time around differ with him on many issues and positions. Jim Dueholm
Trump and Carlson both have blamed America for Russian aggression. Trump has also indulged in "moral equivalence" -- a classic blame America first move -- as when, in response to Bill O'Reilly's statement that Putin is a killer, he said do you think America is so innocent?
Talking about America this way is disgraceful and harmful whether or not the talk is reflected in Trump's policies.
I agree that one can oppose aid to Ukraine without blaming America for the invasion. But people at the forefront of MAGA do both.
I agree with most of your points, Paul. I don't admire Trump as a man, for he's an utterly self-absorbed, mean-spirited, cruel man who often mouths outrageous and detestable things, but I don't think MAGA Republicans, whether at the forefront or not, can be tarred with the Trump or Carlson brush. I can't think of a prominent Trump supporter who justifies Putin actions by pointing to America's past, or blames America for the Ukrainian invasion.. In the end, I think Trump's personality will affect his place in history, but it will be outweighed by his performance.. Jim

Thanks for the comment, Jim.

Thanks again , Jim. You get the final say this time.
