Great post. My only fear is that a lot of candidates will join the ranks against Trump, allowing him to pick them off one by one, as he did in 2016. DeSantls has widespread support and the talents and thick skin needed to ignore and parry Trump's vicious attacks. If he's willing to throw his hat in the ring, I would be inclined to discourage other hats. Jim Dueholm.

I think DeSantis is too politically smart to challenge Trump in 2024. He needs those Trump supporters. DeSantis will only be fifty in 2028 and be a shoo-in with a free and fair election.

There's always a trade off with a politician's calculations. Picking up votes in one demographic can lose you votes in another. Most Trump supporters feel it's the attacks against Trump that are vicious. Trump could lose support if he suddenly became genteel. And the establishment still wouldn't support him because he wants to put America first.

DeSantis-Paul 2024! This doesn’t pass the smell test: In 2010, Republicans won the popular vote by 2.5 MM votes and gained 63 seats. In 2022, Republicans won the popular vote by almost 6 MM and only gained 9. Election deniers unite!

I remember the good ol' days, before you were defenestrated from PLb. Back then, we were always hearing it was the beginning of the end for Trump. It never seemed to happen. Kind of like Achilles and the Tortoise. But it should hearten you to know, if you don't already, the PLb proprietors have come full circle back to their #neverTrump roots.

A more recent poll from a Morning Consult survey has it Trump 48% and DeSantis 26%. And I hear most viable candidates have said publicly they won't run if Trump does. It's alleged that DeSantis has said so privately. There will be a lot of pressure on DeSantis to run, but he knows it could end his political career. He will need those Trump supporters in the future. He's a shoo-in in 2028 and only fifty years old. The establishment doesn't care if they destroy DeSantis' career or not. They're only interested in destroying President Trump and preventing him from running in 2024.

It's only the republican establishment that's ginning up the negative reactions. the republican establishment are globalists, not conservatives. they no longer have any credibility with the repub base. I expect 2024 to be like 2016. The republican establishment will employ every underhanded and unethical dirty trick to try and defeat President Trump. And if he wins the nomination, for a third time, they will be supporting the dem candidate, for the third time.

The attack on both DeSantis and Youngkin were misguided both in tone and timing. Only the most rabid Trump supporter was in the mood to see our two brightest lights since 2020 roughed up by Trump.

Trump's strategy was sound. He seems to be sending a message to his two strongest rivals not to enter the race. But the tactics were clownist and he did tremdous damage to himself. I think Trump is done. The only question is how much damage he does to the GOP in the process of realizing.

Trump is getting much of the blame for the stillborn red wave but clearly the infighting between Trump and McConnell/McCarthy is a big part of the story. The stupid party sel-destructs, again.

Paul, what's up with Everton!

Everton's problem is that the team can't score because its front line -- the center forward and the two wide men -- is substandard. I know we allowed three goals at Bournemouth on Saturday, but overall the defense has been pretty solid. The midfield is okay, too.

But up front, we're dire. Richarlison's late-season goals kept us up last year, but he's gone. No one has stepped up the replace him.

Unless we acquire a decent goal-scorer (or unless Calvert-Lewin finds his form from two years ago), it will be a long season -- one that might end up with Everton relegated.

I hated the fact that the World Cup in Qatar meant a lengthy break in the Premier League season. But I need a break from Everton's season, and Frank Lampard could use one too.

So bring on the World Cup.
